The effect of drinking grapefruit juice or consuming grapefruit while using alprazolam is not certain. Some web sites suggest that it increases blood concentrations by inhibiting the intestinal metabolism. However, there is a published paper, which suggests that the effect are in fact negligible because the effect on the inhibition of the CYP3A4 enzyme did not correlate, in a statistically significant manner, to the increase of blood plasma concentrations of alprazolam due to alprazolam's high bioavailability.

I'm currently taking .25mg a day..sometimes more if the day was particularly hectic....but never more than .50mg.

The warning is more for people who drink 2-3 glasses of grapefruit juice. Basically it interferes with how the medication is broken down within the system and depending on the medication, could equal 3x the dosage you actually took.

Depending on who you ask they also say grapefruit should be avoided. I would ask your doctor or pharmacist about the interactions. Also mention any other medications you are taking.

What doseage of Xanax are you on?

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Xanax and lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit products with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor
