My GAD? or is it something else

I was diagnosed with GAD. I was wondering if all of my symptoms fit with my diagnosis.

Constant worrying about almost everything.

Always thinking i have a disease or a virus or some other type of illness, hypochondriasis type feelings. Vigerously researching to see what symptoms i have and do not have and what not.
Always linking new aches and pains to the current virus/disorder/sickness i have become obsessd with. And once i finally convince myself that i dont have it, i find a new one to worry about.

Sometimes slightly paranoid : If i leave my open bottle of water out (cap still on) at work, and notice it has been moved when i am not arround, I get paranoid that someone put something in it, or it was poisoned. I either finally end up drinking it, or sometimes throw it away. Samething with those free candy bowls, i cant always convince myself its 100% safe to take one.

So does this aound about right for my disorder? I do not have OCD.

I know how you all feel!!! I found the root of my problems was all fear!! Self talk about what teh truth really is about situations helped me tremendously. We have the best things in life and can eat healthy and be healthy and we are ok . And I agree with fit over 40. Even though meds can be used for many great things...

Newsflash!!!  If your doctor is ONLY prescribing anti-depressants for your anxiety...SWITCH doctors now.  I was diagnosed with GAD and was given Lexapro and Prozac...Lexapro sent me to the ER with a major anxiety attack as it shot my nerves to the roof.  My doctor decided that prozac would be more mild and so I gave it a shot while pleading for anti-anxiety medication.  She didn't want to give it to me because supposedly they can be addictive??!  NEWSFLASH anti-depressants (Uppers) are addictive!!  They just costs more.  After spending over $4K on medical procedures to determine that all I had was GAD, I finally got my prescription for Ativan..an anti-anxiety medication.  I GOT MY LIFE BACK!  I had to report my doctor to her medical practice because SHE DIDN'T GIVE me what I needed at the time and it resulted in excessive costs for stress, lung and esophagus tests.

Antidepressants costs a whole lot more than sedatives..certainly more than Ativan.  I paid, with insurance, $92 for Lexapro (30 pills) and $1.80 for Ativan (60 pills).  I stated this before, BUT THIS IS A CONSIPIRACY with the pharmaceutical companies and a lot of doctors trying to make money.  You heard of the lawsuit with oxycontin??  The pharmaceutical companies were giving doctors kickbacks in order to get them to prescribe their medication.  Read "Natural Cures" by Mark Trudeau and you'll be surprised at the money making business like doctors, hospitals and drug companies.

Yay i joined! Ill fill out everything i left out later, when I have more time. To answer Shelzmikes questions :

I Feel i have had it for a long time. at least 4 years. I was a worryer as a child, and i think that grew into GAD. I have been afflicted by the Anxiety pains for about 3 years, which caused me to finally try and get some help. I went in originally for sleep problems. It is very hard for me to sleep. I did not get any sleep meds though, and they told me to take a sleeping disorder class, which i never took because of time constraints. I still have not been given anything to help with my sleeping problems. As for treatment, i have monthly apntments with my psychologist to just talk, and my regular doctor keeps giving me different antidepressents, to help with my anxiety and what she thinks is depression probably, even tho i do not feel depressed. I also have Klonopin to help with anxiety flare ups, but i have no refills for this, so i have to use it sparingly, only used one pill so far, and it helped. My anxiety is still always there, but i have only been on my newly prescribed prozac for a little over a week. I discontinued zoloft because of side effects. I really am trying to be hopefull about the prozac working, but i feel it is not right for me, and my doctor seems reluctent to give me any real anxiety meds, and for some reason will not give me anything to help with sleep.

The responses to you sound like the right stuff to me. One suggestion, though: JOIN US!

One of the BEST ways to get the most out of this forum to work is to JOIN it - become a part of it. Its easy -just click the Join Link -enter some profile information about yourself -even a picture if you care to- and anything you think would help us get to know you faster and better, and you can change this material whenever you like. You will also be accessible to receive private messages when other members click the name you've given yourself -sort of a "push to talk" feature. After you've done that, spend some time just using various features of the forum. For example, to see all the posts or responses that someone has made, just click their handle, go to their profile, click Posts, and read to your heart's content. You may also enter search terms -including member names- in the search box at the upper right of your screen and the system will retrun everything matching the term(s) you entered. This INCLUDES a drug database that will give you both user posts about drugs as well as the medical information about the drug. A great way to get quick answers about therapeutic effect, side effects, interactions, etc.

One of the profile categories is your mood, which you may change anytime you like.

Along the right side of your screen is a section of Recent Activity, which not only alerts you to new posts, but new ANYTHING, including journal entries and mood. This is a way to telegraph the community at large without actually creating a separate post. Thus, if you see a friend's mood has changed while you are working on a response or post, it can alert you to send them a private message to learn more or simply let them know you're thinking of them. Likewise, if you are going to be "out," you could enter something like "off line for the night" as your mood, and people would know you're away from the forum for awhile.

If you do this kind of exploring and experimenting right away, you'll be up-to-speed quickly. If you see the message you are reading now as part of a direct response I (or anyone) has made to one of your posts, it was probably copied and pasted from this journal. I hate form letters and auto-responses as much as anyone -but I also hate forgetting to tell people what they need to know, so this is my safety-net. Consider it as part of your "Welcome" kit. So -please join and try things out.

You might also want to read my entries for the "Right Click Trick" and "When in Haste, Use Copy 'n Paste" for some other convenient time-savers.

We're glad you are here!

Short and simple - 100% yes - I have had GAD for 7 years now and although I am well on my way to recovering from it, this was me exactly for a long time. I still occaisionally commit the "sin" of looking up symptoms :) , but no longer. I want to, but I FORCE myself not to - it is never good - I only make myself panic worse, then in a few days when my symptom is gone I feel really bad and wished that I hadn't put myself through all that. How long have you had GAD and what are you doing (treatment-wise) about it?

I am the exact same way.  I suffered my first panic attack in my mid 20's and now have reacurring anxeity. I am a classic hypochondriac and am obssesed about my health.  At first I thought I had blood pressure problems, then back problems, and now I am obsessed about having heart problems even though I have had multiple tests in the past few years to disprove this theory.  If I have some chest pain in must be a heart attack, if I have a headache it must be from high BP, etc.  I have become oversensitized to normal bodily functions and aches and pains.
