Namaste,
Paxil is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It works by restoring the balance of serotonin which helps to improve certain mood problems.
Paxil is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
If you suffer from panic attacks, I would think that you're doctor would have prescribed a different medication for you to control your attacks, such as a sort-acting benzo.
The Paxil will help with generalized anxiety, but isn't very good for panic attacks.
I'd talk with my doctor about the attacks you've been having and ask him about medication to specifically treat the panic attacks.

i take paxil myself. until it starts working your dr. should give you something for the anxiety. the best dose to stop the anxiety and panic attacks was 20mgs for me. i'm a little surprised your dr. did'nt start you out at 20mgs. it took a little over a week for it to start working for me. maybe you need your dose increased. this may not be the right med for you but for me it did stop the anxiety and panic attacks and helped my depression. talk to your dr. about increasing your dose. take care. remar
I take paxil also and have been on it several yrs now and its one of the best working drugs for my depression that I have found.. I started out on 20 mg and after a few weeks went to 40 and thats what I take now .. But its for depression not panic attacks, if you are having panic attacks you need a benzo with it.. The paxil does help with some of my anxieties but not all of them, so thats why generally you get a combo.. When a panic attack comes on you can take the benzo to stop the attack..I've been dealing with this problem since I was a teenager so I've been on meds a long time and without them I just cant function properly at all... Good luck with finding the right medication for you.. If you want to talk message me i'd be glad to help if I can with any q/a you have ..I do have a medical background also of 10 yrs ..Bri
HEY!! Thanks for all the replys! He did prescribe me klonopin too! I forgot to put that in there. I think the reason he didnt start me on a higher dose is because i am very sensitive to medication. He wants me to increase to 20 slowly. I guess i just need to give it time to get into my system and in the mean time take my klonopin!!
Thanks!
Kristy
