should Prozac be prescribed for GAD and should a70 yr old female take it for life

Hi, It was my GP who prescribed Prozac.  She diagnosed me with GAD. I
was worried about my daughter who is ill - I don't think I have GAD. My Dr. told me I had to take Proxac for EVER!!  I was prescribed Prozac many years ago when my Mother died and it made me feel even more sad, plus numerous other side-effects.  I have not taken Prozac this time and I
amd just working through this difficult time right now.  Thanks for your reply,

yes you can take Prozac for GAD. I've been told you can stay on an antidepressant for life by 2 doctors and a phyciatrist. Of course that is if you do good on one and it helps:)

Are you saying you are 70 and a psychiatrist has prescribed Prozac for anxiety?

I am 76 and have tried Prozac a couple of times since I was 60...it magnifies anxiety for me but each of us is different.  Many women take it for depression and anxiety and do well.

It is your choice.  If you do well on drug, take it.  Anxiety disorders can seriously affect quality of life.  Any medication that assists your functioning well at this stage is good.
