Prozac sent me through the roof with Anxiety. I have tried all kinds of the new SSRI drugs and have awful side effects. Imipramine is the only one I have taken that worked without all the side effects. If I go too high on the dose though, I get anxious. I don't know about the Brand name Tofranil. I will ask my Psych about it.
I was on imipramine for four years, when it stopped working. It didn't get rid of my old phobias, but it stopped me from getting new ones. The good thing about the old meds, if you can handle the side effects, is they've been around a long time and so we know better what they do to people than we do with the newer ones. And I believe studies pretty much show they work about the same percentage of the time as ssris and other meds, though none have been studied for long-term use. I found Paxil worked better for me, but it also destroyed me coming off it, whereas quitting imipramine was easy. But this will differ depending on the person. I also found the side effects of tricyclics more annoying than those of ssris, but at least it left me the same person -- Paxil affected my personality. But we're all different, and that makes it tough to answer these questions.
Talk with your doctor about how you are doing and see whaat he says.
He may increase your dose or just tell you to wait a couple more weeks.
You've gone this far with prozac you may as well give it a good trial.
Tofranil is an old one...perhaps the first antidepressant...the new ones are just not the same.
I used to take doxepin, decades ago. I helped right away..8 weeks was a long adjustment period for you to go thru with tofranil.
Let us know how you are doing.
