opposite effect of klonopin

Klonopin (.5 mg) taken at 8:00am caused me to be wide awake at one in the morning and without taking xanax and 5mg of ambien would not have been able to sleep at all.  This happened with my first two doses so I stopped taking it.  As this was prescribed for insomnia, my question is, should this have happened or does it take a week or two for it to start helping me sleep??

I don't know much about klonopin, but I was prescribed Xanax and ambien for sleep, after suffering from anxiety/emotional turmoil.  I was specifically told by my GP that you can take Xanax and ambien at the same time.  One is a benzo and the other is a hypnotic.

If the Klonopin was prescribed to you for insomnia, why were you taking it at 8:00am? It's also difficult to see how that small a dose could keep you awake for 17 hours. You should let your doctor know it had this effect on you............some medications in some people can have the opposite effect they are meant to.

Klonpin, as with most benzodiazepines, does not have to build up in your system to produce drowsiness. This side effect most often goes away when our bodies adjust to this particular med. Unless your insomnia is related to anxiety, I don't really understand why your doctor would even have you taken it.

Since you have stopped taking it, please talk with your doctor about alternative sleep aids. Taking Klonopin and Xanax and Ambien at the same time, even if they are taken hours apart, is not a good idea. Two benzos should almost never be taken together unless under strict guidance from your doctor.

There are a number of new drugs on the market for insomnia, discuss with your doctor trying one of those before turning to the more powerful psychotropics.
I wish you a restful sleep
