How to reduce the pain for arthritis of the hands

My mum is 79 years old and has arthritis in her hands and says her thumb hurts so bad and she is always wearing gloves. Now she is taking 2 pain killers a day. She also has diabetes and high blood pressure though well controlled. How can I help her with the pain?

Trudie, I think they sell them at Mary Maxim right near you for craft people.  My friend does a humongous amount of quilting and wears them all the time.

Carolanivey, thank you for this.  I didn't know about those and could use myself.

Compression gloves might help a bit, as well. These help reduce swelling by applying gentle pressure, and help keep the hands warm. Look up IMAK gloves on the internet for one example.

It is important that she find see her doctor for tests to determine what kind of arthritis she has (there are over 100 kinds) so that the appropriate treatment can be prescribed and to stop any deterioration of the joints.  Until she can see her doctor she should try putting heat on them and take a fish oil supplement.  I hope she can get some relief soon.
