I have debated answering to your post because I had a doctor tell me I had "rust" behind my knee caps, except he left out any big long medical name.  I don't have any answers for you, I just wanted you to know that you aren't alone.  I don't know what your knees do, but mine make horrible grinding noises and occasionally pop out of joint.  I've actually been told that it's nothing to be too concerned with until it becomes painful (which was when I almost punched the doctor in the nose, because if it wasn't painful, I wouldn't have been there).  I can listen if you need someone to vent to, I have a whole list of medical issues so I've had to quit working and I don't do much because of my health so I spend a lot of time on the computer.  Either way, like I said, I know I didn't help any, I just wanted you to know that you weren't alone.
