I have tried both - and sometimes I make the mistake of taking an ibuprofen after taking 1 meloxipam because I'm so desperate for the pain to go away and sometimes neither medication works as well as it should.  The ibuprofen works just a little bit, but wears off after 4 hours or so.  But if I were to compare both - it's about the same.  I prever the ibuprofen only because you can take it whenever the pain seems bad enough.  With Meloxipam, you only take 1/day.

Hello and Welcome to our Arthritis Community,

You've asked a good question - and received some good information. I'll just add a bit.

As you know Meloxicam (Common Brand Name, Mobic) and Ibuprofen are NSAIDs. Each can be effective in reducing pain and inflammation. As with all medications, their effectiveness often depends on an individual's reaction (metabolism).

That being said I have found some research on the two which actually indicates that Ibuprofen is lightly more effective for most ppl. There may be conflicting research/studies - I can't locate it. Now one must weigh the pros and cons with all medications - including short and long term side effects, cost and so forth.

It appears that 800mg of Ibuprofen is about equal in dose to 15mg of Meloxicam. Which one is better?  I think it boils down to what's best for you.

Don't forget to protect your Intestinal Track. NSAIDs are tough on our delicate linings - so be cautious. Never take a NSAID on an empty stomach. Be sure your physicians watches your organ functions - through frequent labs (blood draws).

I hope we've been helpful. If you have additional questions or you need more clarification please let us know.

Take Care,
~Tuck

Hi 7041949.  :)

First, I want to tell you that I'm so glad you found our PM (Pain Management) Forum here on MH ( MedHelp ).

From what I have read the 15 mg's of Meloxicam is taken once a day, whereas the 800mg's of Ibuprofen is taken every 6 hrs OR as prescribed by your Doctor.  From everything I've read those 2 doses seem to be the normal dosages given especially for arthritis.  The 2 doses seem to be equal in effectiveness, depending on the person.  It's up to which you and your Doctor think is best for you.

Hope that's been of some help to you.

Best wishes and I hope you will keep us updated on your progress.
