Vitamin D Deficiency

I had a blood test that stated my Vitamin D level was 25 (low) and normal is between 30-100.  My question is can vitamin d cause hair loss? I've been experiencing severe sudden hair loss the past couple months along with lots of fatigue, always tired, nausea, headaches and just a general malaise feeling.  I've also had my thyroid tested and its normal a long with a scraping test on the scalp for fungus which also showed nothing.  Thank you for your time.

Hi!

I answered your other post on another site, and went to send you a personal message.  That's how I saw this post.  Vitamin D deficiency is classic for Celiac disease, along with hair loss and GERD.  Plus every other symptom you have mentioned is common to Celiac disease.  There are now blood tests and the most definitive test is upper endoscopy with biopsy, but I am 100% certain you have Celiac disease and changing to a gluten-free diet is going to help you immensely.  There is no time to waste - get tested.

You will even need to think about toothpaste and lipstick.  That's how strictly you have to avoid gluten.  Believe me, it's worth it.  Nothing will help your GERD until you've been off gluten for 2-3 months (if my coworker is typical - GERD was her only symptom, but she had severe vitamin D deficiency and I think anemia).  In my office, we have four people in my section.  Three of us have Celiac disease, and the fourth has not been tested.

Hi and thanks for using the forum.

I have not read about hair loss being a sign of vitamin D deficiency (this does not mean that it is not possible).  However, your other symptoms (fatigue, nausea, etc.) can be symptoms of vit D deficiency.  You could try asking your doctor for a vit. D supplement and see if your symptoms improve with the supplementation.  If your levels rise to within a normal range and your symptoms persist, then you might want to try seeing an endocrinologist to see if there are any hormonal issue going on.  Good luck.
