Lisinopril 10mg decreased to 5mg

Hi I have a history of high blood pressure. Three months ago I was put on Lisinopril 10mg. So now my Dr. wants me to try 5mg. I have a few questions.  Does 5mg really work for high blood pressure? I have never really hurd of anyone taking 5mg of lisinopril for high blood pressure.  Will my body withdraw or need to adjust to a lower dose?  Thank you an advance.

Came back from the Dr. Today. And my BP is with in normal range. I have also been keeping a close eye on my BP for two weeks now on 5mg. I did notice for a few days after going from 10mg to 5mg I was feeling slightly light headed. But my BP was good (120 over 80). Dr told me my body was adjusting to a lower dose.

It seems like the exercies and diet is paying off.

Lisinopril is not a medication known to result in withdrawal effects when the dose is reduced or the drug is stopped. After you have reduced the dose, your doctor will recheck your blood pressure to see if the lower dose is keeping your blood pressure in the desired range. The typical range is 10-40mg per day for hypertension (high blood pressure), but it can be effective at the 5mg dose to maintain your blood pressure. As with many medications, some patients will respond differently; with some requiring higher and some requiring lower doses of the same drug to reach the desired effect.

For one my BP at night was droping not too low but low enough for a change. Second he told me something along the lines that since I am not a diabetic 5mg was good.

Why not ask your doctor why you are being switched to a different dosage? Maybe less is better with this medication? It might be a good idea to re-post your question so it's back on top, and likely to get a response from a pharmacist. Let me know what your doctor's rationale is for the change, if you don't mind. Take care.

Well I thought 5mg was for heart problems not high blood pressure.

I'm not a pharmacist, but I do know someone who takes the 5mg. strength of lisinopril  for their high blood pressure. My other thought is why would they make a 5mg. strength if it wasn't effective, and /or needed? Just a thought, i don't mean to be a wiseguy. Take care.
