My Son 3Yrs, 3 months old has been diagnosed with developmental delay and will be starting special education in the school soon.

What other services are available apart from special education?

Here are his symptoms :

1. Doesn't speak much, most of the time not able to communicate his needs, uses gestures.
2. Likes to be isolated when put in a group of people/kids. Likes to get along with older kids than his age kids. Takes time to build relationship.
3. Sing songs/poems. Infact he sings lot of songs and learns a new one quickly.
4. Very moody, if he prefers to to something he would put all his attention into it.
5. Likes elevators and will do anything to go on an elevator. It is getting hard for us to go to a mall/restaurant/hotel.
6. Sharp memory, we saw an instance where he remembered where an elevator  (which is far away ) is in a restaurant when we visited that restaurant after 18 months. He walked us to the elevator.
7. He had poor eye contact which improved a lot recently.
8. Doesn't follow commands most of the times.
9. Very attached with Mom.
10. Doesn't respond often when called by his name.
11. Doesn't engage in reading a book.
12. Likes solving floor puzzles.
13. Tries to run away sometimes without having awareness about father/mother. Doesn't have fear of being lost.
14. Only likes to watch music videos.
15. Hard to get his attention sometimes.

Any help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks

Right now, developmental delay is about the only thing they can say about a child of that age.  Any autism diagnosis take at about 3 years or older.   My daughter diagnosis gradually unfolded in that way.  Also at this point at 28 moinths the therepies and treatments are pretty much the same.  As he gets 3 years or more then, the developmental diagnoses get more and more specific.

It was Childfind, which diagnosed my son. As per your suggestion, I will talk to the pediatrician.

Who diagnose a developmental delay for your son. For a couple of years we were told my son had developmetal delays, he has other medical issues that were believed to be causing his developmental delays. Last week he was diagnosed with Autism.
The descriotion of your son sounds very similar to mine in many regards, I think there are enough red flags from what you describe to warrent testing you son for Autism, ask your son's pediatrician if he can be refered to a complex development specialist for testing.
Best wishes to you.

Are you connected to any support groups?  He sounds like a delightful child from the way you describe him.  But, you have challenges!
