Jaidyns Diagnosis

My grandson, Jaidyn, has been receiving physical, occupational, and speech therapy since before he turned one.  I was pretty sure he had CP because of his difficult birth, but he had appointments with four child developmental specialists on Tuesday August 6th, 2013. These specialists were in the fields of speech, hearing, co-ordination and language.  He was diagnosed with Developmental Coordination Disorder and Receptive/Expressive Language Disorder.

What does this mean for his future?  Will he grow out of either of these disorders?

Thank you for your explanation. My heart hurts. Jaidyn appears to be very intelligent. I feel like he is trapped in a body that keeps him isolated from others. I am worried about the emotional issues that will effect his self-esteem.

I am sorry to hear about your grandson Jaidyn. Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a movement disorder and if there are associated neurological symptoms and difficult childbirth then ischemic brain injuries and/or cerebral palsy could be a cause. A brain MRI may be needed along with detailed neurological and psychological assessment (may have been done by the specialists he saw on Aug. 6th). DCD can affect your grandson’s reading and writing abilities, social interaction and ability to carry out activities of daily living. Presence of Receptive/Expressive Language Disorder can further affect his communication skills both through body language and spoken speech.
The situation is tough and Jaidyn’s doctors can best explain his prognosis. Hope this helps. Take care!
