Auto Immune ??
What could be the cause of lots of canker sores in a 11yo for years? Hx of
bloody stools ruled out by EGD and colonoscopy at age 11. Had basic lab work
done for Lupus and Chrones that were normal but sed rate was elevated.
Family hx: mom-GI issues, IBS with bile in stomach, thyroid, AVNRT, GB out,
hernia. Seen rheumatoid specialist and GI, ruled out Lupus and Chrones by labs
and EGD and colonoscopy. Childhood hx of canker sores also. I have had a pos.
ANA and elevated sed rate for 10+ years but they always say that it is okay
after they checked for Chrones, Lupus, thyroid auto immunes.
Maternal grandmother-Chrones, Lupus, thyroid, brain aneurysm. 3 maternal great
uncles= colon resection from Chrones. Maternal grandfather-Brain bleed, colon
cancer.
IF I can get diagnosed correctly for whatever auto immune disease, I feel my son
will also be diagnosed with it. They also check the normal family hx. i believe
it is something else.
All 3 of my children had a protein allergy when they were born. My 11yo in
question was the worst with the allergy, he had bloody stools at 10 days old
with sigmoidoscopy performed. Please give us some information on what to check?

To add, the dosage is 1000mcg of sublingual B12 each day. I can highly recommend sublingual in spray form! :)

I have suffered for many years with extremely painful mouth ulcers. I read a magazine article that mentioned a study done at Ben-Gurion University in Israel. They found that patients given 1000 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin B12 for a six-month period experienced a substantial decrease in break-outs or even a complete cure.
I have been on this regimen for six months to date, and if I experience any sore, it lasts for only one day, then disappears completely. I recommend that people who have recurrent canker sores check with the physician first, and then consider 1000 mcg of vitamin B12. It has made a major difference in my life. No more suffering, no more pain."
A. We tracked down the study you read about. It was published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine (Jan-Feb., 2009). The investigators used a sublingual (under the tongue) form of vitamin B12. They concluded, "Vitamin B(12) treatment, which is simple, inexpensive, and low-risk, seems to be effective for patients suffering from RAS [recurrent aphthous stomatitis, or canker sores], regardless of the serum vitamin B(12) level."
