Dear Dr. Nicolson, My family has a history of autoimmune disease. I have had several undiagnosed conditions, including persistent almost permanent allergic rashes (3 biopsies no diagnosis), bloating intestines with several food allergies developing in adulthood, dry eyes, transient muscle weakness that makes me drop things and stumble (checked for MS 15 years ago and it was negative.) My mom has lupus, I was checked by a rheumatoid arthritis specialist when i was 28 because my right leg kept giving out and he had no answers. (I am now 49). I am able to lead a normal life but my eating is very restricted; since I had chemo for breast cancer last year, my intestines and liver are much more sensitive. I had two mononucleosis infections five years apart, in late adolescence and early adulthood. Chronic exhaustion has often been a feature of my life. I want to feel well....I consulted a Natureopath about five weeks ago, I am eating a near vegetarian diet with lots of greens and daily exercise. Any ideas to improve on this? Thank you
Hi!
Since you have permanent itchy rashes and issues with digestion and gut there are two things which should be ruled out. One is autoimmune hepatitis and the other is H. pylori infection of the stomach. Both can cause itchy rashes which could be negative for any autoimmune disorder like lupus. Also, you need to test vitamin B12 levels and see. Often deficiency of intrinsic factor in the gut is responsible for poor B12 absorption. This can cause nerve and muscle weakness. Please discuss with your treating doctor. Take care!
