There are allot of things that could go wrong. He could lose the ability to do allot of things. I haven't been able to find any percentages yet, but the majority are considered successful.
The term successful doesn't mean that you will be like new, but that they replaced the disk.
You might be in pain for the rest of your life or lose feeling or control of body parts but the doctor considers it a success.
There are allot of people that feel great and have no problems with pain or feelings. I met a few. My friends wife had 3 disks replaced metal hooks and other things done to her back. She had three kids and has no pain.
My brothers father in law had an L5 operation and has been in tremendous pain for the last 35 years. He waddles and takes all kinds of pain medication. But the operation was done along time ago.
You can always freeze the sperm for insurance, but I doubt he will have that problem.
