8 year old son is hurting

Hello,
My 8 year old son is having back and leg pains, we did an MRI, which showed small disc bulge L5-S1.  Went to see Neurosurgeon yesterday and he doesn't feel he needs surgery.  He is having daily leg and back pain and is now complaining of being unable to empty his bladder!  Our middle boy had a tethered spinal cord and needed surgery for this. These are the same signs that he was having but, it seems no one will listen to us!  Our pediatrician is going to check him for Arthritis now...lab work, etc.  I would really appreciate any other thoughts that any of you may have for us.  Thank you very much.

Did your boy ever had a hard fall on hard surface? maybe during skiing, roller blading or gymnastics?  Having a bulge at 8 yrs old is unusaul, but remember that pain in leg may not be from that bulge.  I would do an MRI from Neck down.  MRI have no radiation so they are safe unlike ct scans.  I would also xray his lower back to check for stability issues, xray during extension and flexion.  Good luck

Thank you for your concerns.  I am certain that he does not have cauda equina syndrome.  We have taken him back to the doctor and we did plain xrays of his back and will do some blood work to check for arthritis???  Which I'm pretty sure he does not have but, better to check everything out.  I'm not sure what to think anymore.  We were told that if the pain continues then we may need to do the MRI up farther, in the thoracic region.  Anyone ever hear of someone that is 8 years old having a bulging disc?  None of the doctors that I've spoke with have heard of this, unless there are underlying problems, if only we had a magic ball to show us what is wrong!

if he is having bladder problems..go to er asap!!!! the longer you let it go on, the more of a chance surgery will not repair the damage being done to his bladder function. there is a condition called cauda equina syndrome....its SERIOUS!!!!
