How long?

I am a junior in color guard in high school band and I have lumbar scoliosis that needs surgery. If I get the surgery in the summer right after school ends do you think that I can get back into guard within 6-7 weeks. Keep in mind that it's not a state year so the routine won't be that hard.

No, 6-7 weeks will not suffice. If you consent to corrective surgery for a severe scoliosis, recovery requires many months of healing, physical therapy, etc.

Please ask your surgeons what the operation will entail. Have them show you pictures -- this is very advanced, high-tech surgery that involves reshaping your spine, fusing vertebrae, and installing titanium hardware to support your spine during the long healing process. Sometimes multiple surgeries are necessary. Ask your surgeon what he/she projects for the recovery process.

Find out everything about these procedures before consenting -- you must understand and weigh the risks vs. the benefits of surgery. Ask your parents or another adult whom you respect for help with this.
