CT results - suggested treatment

Hello everyone,

I currently had a CT scan of my neck due to some persistent headaches and neck pain I was having.  This is what the results were.  Prominent degenerative and discogenic disease changes at C5-6 and C6-7 predominating at the lateral level producing central stenosis and some minor right foraminal stenosis.  C5-C6: Osteophyte-disc complex change, chiefly osteophyte at this time, causes minimal ventral impingement on the epidural space.  No hernieation or critical stenosis is produced.  C6-C7: Prominent, broad-based osteophyte-disc complex change is seen with some extension more to the right than left of midline impinging on the ventral aspect of the cord and causing minor right later recess stenosis.

My chiropractor says he can keep me symptom free by keeping me in alignment.  He is a "cracker".   I am currently attending classes for a physical therapy assistance degree, and it is important that I be able to handle the physical demands of the job.  What would be my best course of treatment?  Can keeping myself  aligned really be enough?  Would certain exercises help?  Is surgery inevitable?

I made an appt with an orthopedic doctor next month.  I just want to see what my best treatment options are in order to halt the progression of this.  The last thing I want to do is finish my degree and be unable to work!

I have an advanced case of degenerative disc disease in both the cervical and lumbar spine, and personally, I would not let a chiropractor go near my neck or lower back.

From others experience, does the cracking done in chiropractic care tend to help or hurt.  I have relatives who have had chiropractors tell them NEVER crack a bad neck.  However, this is all my guy does when adjusting.

These results are consistent with degenerative disc disease.

Chiropractic, while helpful, cannot improve this condition. Surgery does not always improve pain in DDD, though it can stabilize the spine when needed. Interventional pain management techniques may help with pain. Anti-inflamatory medication may help. Other treatments may offer pain relief.
