My father is suppose to have surgery for pinched nerve at L 4-5. is this surgery dangerous, is it successful and what does he need to know?

Sometimes he was loosing sensation in the legs and bottom area.He's always in pain in the lower back, hip and part of his leg

He's already had cortisone shots etc. He has a pinched nerve in the L 4-5 region. Dr said he's going to relieve the nerve in the L 4-5 region. 6-8 week recovery and about 14 stitches. My dad is worried about back surgery cause he's heard it could cause more problems. The dr told him that it's not a guarantee that he will find complete relief. I was hoping to talk with people that have had similar surgeries and see if it's worth the risk. Thanks and appreciate any feedback

What is causing his pinched nerve? What conservative methods have been attempted first? What type of surgery is his dr wanting to perform? What are his symptoms?
