The difference in a herniated disc and a ruptured disc is... With a ruptured disc the pain never goes away. It is constant. With a herniated disc it can come and go depending on the position you are in. Herniated disc are painful but a ruptured disc is like a knife in your neck. I hope you feel better soon. Only and MRI will show you for sure.

I Have 2.  An MRI will show that.  My systems are low backache my right buttocks aches like someone had kicked me there.  The pain goes all the way down my thigh to my foot.  It feels like a toothache in my thigh.  Xray didnt show it .  Drs kept saying it was sciatica nerve which runs down your leg but the MRI showed the true thing.  I go to nuerosurgeon tommorow to see when surgery is going to be.  I cant lift leg up towards me when sitting or standing.  Also is your trying to pick up something say you dropped I have to keep that bad leg out to side straight cause it hurts too bad to bend it .  Also my herniated disc is in the nerve root so your systems may differ.  Hope this helps
