Constant popping of back w/ constant back pain

So I've been through the ringer  quite a few times. I've been thrown and drug by several horses. Stepped on and cracked a rib. In about the last 6-8 months almost every time I move my back the right way it pops. If I sit up straight it cracks and pops and it relieves the constant pain for a few seconds then it's back. Trying to get to the doctor but it can get extremely painful at times. It gets so bad that it will knock the wind out of me when I move the right way sometimes. Any advice?? Help!!

Hey Cowgirl. Welcome to the spine forum.

Horses can be your best friend, or a holy terror. I've been kicked, stepped on, and thrown, and the mean ones will bite and crush you against a fence, given the opportunity. Horses weigh about 5 times as much as we do, and can do some damage.

Everyone who deals with horses cracks a rib now and then. Cracked ribs are sore and hurt when you breath. You have to lie on one side and not the other for a month or so, but they usually heal in a couple of months. This injury sounds like a horse of another color if you'll excuse the pun.

It sounds like you've broken or dislocated a rib around the back, where it attaches to the back bone. You may have cracked one of the spinous processes, which are small points of bone where muscles connect to the back bone, or suffered a pars fracture that helps support the joints in your spine at that level.

Remar is correct -- you need to get yourself to a doc and find out what's going on in there.

Best wishes.

I think it would be a good idea for you to see your Dr. for some testing. It's really hard to say what's going on with your back but you're right, you sure have been through the ringer with several injuries.
Your Dr may want to do some Xrays to see what's going on with your spine. This could be muscle related, spine related or both.
Try and make that appointment soon. In the mean time take Tylenol or another over the counter pain reliever and alternate heat and cold on your back.
