21 degree lumbar scoliosis

Hey everyone,

My name is Michael and I have a 21.4 degree lumbar scoliosis, I am 19 years old and to be honest I'm worried. I'm not sure what the scoliosis could cause, hot to treat it, if it will get worse, if 21.4 degrees is severe, etc.

Any information you have whatsoever regarding any of those things would be fantastic! Thank you!

Hi I am twenty and have 53 degree curve. I have had scoliosis since about age ten and had the surgery for it when I was twelve with a rod put in my back. I was at over an 80 degree curve and doctors dont consider you for surgeryuntil youre well past the 50 degree curve. I wouldnt worry about that because more curve comes when you grow and youre already 19. For pain the most helpful thing that I have found for a long term is massage. Hope this helps, feel free to ask me any questions Id love to help.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
The degree of scoliosis can be mild or severe depending on your age and whether you have cord or nerve compression. Since you are just 19 years old, a 10-15 degree scoliosis is usually considered mild and does not usually cause symptoms. The same may cause pain in a 60-70 year old. A scoliosis ranging from 20 to 30 degrees is often considered moderate in adolescents and responds to conservative treatment. This arrests further loss of contour. If you have scoliosis more than 30 degrees which is not responding to conservative treatment, it may need surgery.
So at 21 degrees, the scoliosis is not severe but if you have cord compression and unrelenting pain, then you may need surgery. Please discuss with your treating doctor.
Take care!
