Thyroid issues after cervical surgery

Hi all!  I had a c6-c7 fusion in 2007 and I heard something the other day and am wanting to know if it is true.  After I had my surgery, I developed Fibromyalgia and tons of weight.  My neighbor's mother had the same surgery and she lost all I gained somewhere in the 30-40 lbs area!  She had three other people that she knew who also had the same surgery, two who lost alot of weight like she did and one who gained weight like I did.  One of the ladies asked her doctor about this and he said that dependent on which way the thyroid was moved for surgery you would either gain or lose weight.
Has anyone ever heard this before?  If so what were your results? I just hate to think that my doctor's could have possibly known about this and never mentioned it to me.
