cervical radiculapathy

I have been diagnosed for cervial radic.would this cause my hands to go numb? I have also been diagnosed with moderate carpal tunnel syndrome although i have previously had carpal tunnel release surgery on both hands. It seems since my neck pain started that the numbness returned to both hands, i can't imagine the cts symptoms would return to both hands at the same time. My ortho dr doesn't want to do cts surgery again due to neck diagnosis and basically has me sitting in limbo, what happens if this is left untreated?

Hi, thanks for your response, yes I do have neck pain I was in a car accident and herniated two discs in the neck when air bag deployed. The most recent MRI still shows the herniation is slightly pushing on the nerve. I'll have to consult the dr on next step. Thanks again.

Might be worth seeing a spine specialist and possibly having an X-ray or an MRI to see what exactly is pinching the nerve in your neck. At this stage it's highly likely that conservative measures such as P.T. would really help. You didn't mention whether or not you had any pain with this? Untreated the numbness could become permanent. I have a couple fingers that never got the feeling back even after neck surgery.

On a side note, I have a relative that had CTS release surgery about 10 yrs ago as well and she has had reoccurring problems with that hand although I don't think it's bad enough to warrant another surgery.

Hi thanks for your response, you are right the numbness alternates from one hand to the other i never noticed both at the same time. I had the emg and it showed moderate carpal tunnel syndrome as well as the cervical radiculapathy on the right side. The doctor is sceptical of cts being I had cts release, but that was 10 years ago. He said he never saw a case where cts comes back,at least ones he has done.

Yes Cervical radiculopathy can cause hand numbness, although as far as I know it's not that common to get it in both hands at the same time. But I'm sure it's possible.

By the way, an EMG can differentiate between CTS and Cervical Radiculopathy, and generally the first course of action to treat it is P.T.
