BP & Nicotine withdrawal

I am BiPolar II rapid cycling and a smoker. I was taking Depakote, Lithium, and Propranolol. I have been off my meds for almost 3 months because I lost my insurance. I want to stop smoking. Since I am struggling with my moods due to lack of meds, I am very concerned about how the nicotine withdrawals if I were to quit cold turkey. Any suggestions? From my research I have found that Chantix is definitely not an option for me.

Yes, thank you for the information. I was on state Medicaid but they cancelled my coverage, it's a long story. My psychiatrist has already told me that he will not put me on ANY antidepressants because of the mood swings. Since I do not have any coverage/money for meds I am just searching for alternatives. I really appreciate your help!

Yes Chantix can sometimes worsen symptoms of bipolar. I know Zyban is another smoking cessation aide but that is another name for the anti-depressent Wellbutrin and an anti-depressent alone in bipolar can often worsen mania. Those are the two that are clinically approved and in standard use. Others are in experimental use. The crucial thing to do is to start medication again as there should be insurance options (such as Medicaid if a person is not working or if they are and it exists in their state the Medicaid Buy in for Working People with Disabilities, there are many other options as well) that would cover it because smoking cessation will cause mood flare ups and it will be easier this way and then your psychiatrist can determine which smoking cessation aide (if needed) would be appropriate for you.
