Concentration shifts constantly frm thing to thing??? HELP

My son is bipolar.  i try to provide structure to his day, but that seems to irrritate him.  If i tell him we will do so and so, 15 min later he is on to something else forgetting what i said previously?  Hard for me to understand if it is him or the disease.  he is 18 yrs old.

I have horrible concentration that has deteriorated over the years. It is worse during episodes. I used to be an avid reader and read novels of all types all the time. Now, I get irritated reading for too long. I mostly stick to reading manga (comic books) because it is cut into pices on the page and the text is generally short. Long paragraphs can be very frustrating for me to read.

I also struggle with reading the news but I try. I have better days and worse days. Some days I can't even finish a comic strip, other days I can read whole articles just fine.

I also have the problem of being told to do something then forgetting moments later. I can forget in 2 seconds. It happens more and more. I used to be great at remembering birthdays and such, but now if it isn't something I think about often, I forget. Also appointments, scheduels, all of those things I used to remember and now I forget. I have to set reminders.

Also, I have trouble being told my schedule constantly. It is important for me to plan how to set my routine, even in places like work or home so that I know what to expect most days. I don't like it to be suddenly changed. I have a lot of things I like to do exactly the same every day and when that routine is upset I seem to not be able to backtrack and it can be triggering. If I do it differently I feel very uncomfortable. It is easy to get irritated and frustrated, more so in an episode.

I am not in the best treatment right now and not in recovery at all, so I agree if you have the ability to get him to his pyschiatrist and for talk therapy, that is the best thing. Treatment and working toward recovery should be helpful for him

It would depend on what the specific cause of his being unable to concentrate and focus is. If its an issue of treatment not working as it should that should be discussed with a psychiatrist. If not (and this would work in addition) they could provide a further referral to a cognitive behavioral therapist as cognitive behavioral therapy can be helpful in addition to medication and talk therapy. There are also NAMI friend and family support groups that help provide some ideas on how to cope with family members with a psychiatric disability and how best to address concerns such as you describe.
