I have been to many as well. Most were right after my mom died when I was a kid. It wasn't helpful to me at that time. I was in too much turmoil and too unwilling to reach out for help.
The last one I went to was after I had my son when I was on Abilify in 2006. I shortly came to realize the support group they had put me into was for people with anger problems who were ordered to be there by the courts. I was in sever trauma and also postpartum depression not to mention my bipolar at that time. So, yeah, that group was really useless to me. Every meeting I was just the girl curled up in a ball crying, but due to that state's form of Medicaid, I was unable to see someone one on one.
But, that doesn't mean they're not helpful. I just didn't have a good experience.
Depends on the group. I've been to many. Some can be supportive. Others can have people who feed off each other's misery. Each one is different and some are better than others depending how they are facilitated and how the people who attend interact. Worth a try for sure.
