I have a question.  How long have you known you're bipolar?  I ask because it sounds like you're pretty new at this.  I'm not sure if you've even accepted your illness yet.  You have to work on that.  It's going to be rough, but please take mine and the others advice into consideration, we've been at it a lot longer.  Like them I too have been on and off my meds several times because I thought I was better or I just didn't want to have to depend on them in order to be normal.  I finally realized that it's not that big of a deal once you find the right med and right dosage, doctor, and therapist.  However, that process does take some time.  So be patient, don't fight it or you will make it worse for yourself.  If you follow your doctor's orders to the T and journal everyday your moodswings and stuff, within a year life will start to seem normal again.  After that it's easy street!  All you have to do is keep up the good work and be a part of a good support group!  That's where we come in!  lol       Sincerely,    Molyba

Ruby said it. Bi polar is for alwasy. It doesnt go away. Just like diabetes  it can be controled through diet, exercise ,regular rest, meds and therapy.

I too have quit my meds 3 different times and all that happened is that I went back to being bi polar. So I have learned that I can control the bi polar ,It doesnt control me.

Now I am also thyroidless so I take 3 little pills.for the rest of my life. Its no big deal I take them now and I get on with living.

I think you already know the answer to that -- bp is in most cases a lifelong disorder.  That means you will always need the meds -- at least that's what my pdoc has told me many times.  There have been times when I felt really good for a long time, and I stopped taking the meds with the doc's approval -- and within a few months I was right back in his office.  He knows what he is talking about -- he always knew I would be back on the meds.

I know the meds are a pain in the butt and they often have side effects and they do not control everything 100% -- but they sure do a lot to relieve the ups and downs of bp and I could not live without them.

Best of luck to you.
