morning trick for seroquel hangover

I've read and read and talked and talked and even personally experimented with my own seroquel dosing.  I'm a card carrying bipolar and typical of such folk have tried everything out there in pharm-world alone and in combination.  For me, Seroquel is the ticket.  I have one problem.

A few years ago I made a move to a more healthy lifestyle which includes diet, exercise, yoga, and meditation - all good things.  I even went back to work.  After almost 3 years of my new lifestyle what works best is hitting the gym first thing.  Problem is even after all these years on seroquel I still wake up with a hangover - foggy as all get out - and lacking energy.

I've weaned myself down to 200mg of seroquel a night and don't seem to feel any bad effects in mood - just enough for sleep which is a major complaint of mine - awful awful insomnia.  I've tried all kinds of relaxation and herbal tea and aromatherapies for relaxation and sleep to no avail.  The other night I was excited to try yet another herbal concoction and since I didn't have to work the next day I decided to skip the seroquel.

It doesn't take a genius to predict that I probably didn't sleep - which I didn't - at all - wonderful relaxation from the tea and calm but no sleep.  The great thing was - a super workout the next morning!  And a wonderful clear headed day!

I have learned the hard way of consequences of not taking my seroquel - so - take it I did last night - and again it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that this morning's workout was drudgery - and i'm still groggy.  I know about seroquel's half life and taking it earlier and earlier is ok if i didn't have to work or have any committments in the evening.

I've been long winded - and I apologize for the long read - but I was wondering if anyone has a brilliant or just plain interesting idea of how to unfog in the AM.  Mega caffeine doesn't do it - ginseng and other herbal stimulants doesn't do it - is there something i could do flush the antihistamine or dopamine or whatever it is that's making me weird - the heck out of me?

I'm willing to try anything - a natural solution would be preferred.

Hello! I understand your plight so well! I too have conducted sooo many experiments with my meds, I am on Seroquel too and it has saved my life! I love the fact it guarantees sleep everynight!
The only advice I have is that you could ask your doctor about Seroquel XR ( modified release) I take 400mg at around 7pm and I am asleep by 10pm ish. It makes me as drowsy as the other Seroquel but I can get up for my kids in the morning ( which I couldn't before )
Apparently XR is more expensive, but it doesn't make me quite as hungry as the normal Seroquel. I have gained a few pounds but that's all!
You might already be taking the XR but just thought I'd suggest it incase you aren't!
Good luck!

Try taking some vitamin B6 immediately upon waking. It hits my system fast and I can function better. I wouldn't go higher than 100mg and a pill would be better than a capsule.

I have the same problem. I have found if I take it around 7pm, when i wake up at 5am the drug has mostly worn off and I dont experience the cloud anymore. So yeah, take it earlier, go to sleep earlier, probably the only remedy for Seroquel.

Hey, thanks so much for sharing that!  That's really helpful.  How long have you been on Seroquel?

I find an icecap from Tim Horntons does the trick and since I'm driving I want to be alert.....

Dear looloo141,
I have diagnosed with bipolar disorder 15 years ago at the age of 30,
I am not 45 years old and I have been taking seroquel at hight dosages, as high of 800mg. My story is that when I used to wake up in the morning, my brain was all fogged up, I could not concentrate well and remember things. It was horrible. Only after like 1 hour later I was able to come to my senses.

I went to a psychiatrist that I really trust her. We have a great relationship. I saw her yesterday which was on 10/15/2015. I was taking 25mg or seroquel which I cut in half 12.5mg. And she told me to go to Walgreens pharmacy and for me to get there Valerian Root 450mg with Passion Flower. It made me sleep great and when I woke up in the morning I felt great. I will no longer be taking Seroquel, its like putting poison in your system!!!

I also with 100 mg of Seroquel have a hangover when I wake up.  So I cut the dose in half and only get 4 hours of sleep.  I would rather sleep and so I deal with it

I agree! It is better than suffering the consequences of mania, but thats all..I wish they could find a way round the numbness.. it would be nice to feel things.

seroquel is a great crisis drug for some people but it isn't a good way of life..took it for months and hated the clumsiness it gave me (athlete) how lazy it made me feel..the overly numb feeling..the blood pressure drops..tardive dyskenisia which i get with most of the drugs lesser with anxiety meds than anti psychotics..Some people just don't do well with these powerful drugs and there isn't a lot of sympathy from people who prescribe them..Omega 3 pharmaceutical grade..CBD oil..magnesium..other mood stabilizers..can have good effect with less of that total whammy that these drugs are..

thanks for the responses - BP the pdocs will tell you is manageable - and for me gratefully, yes it is - sometimes I wonder though how a life in a semi-comatose state is better - better for whom?

To all my fellow BP'ers out there - Namaste!
