Baby Zebra Finch out of nest

We have a baby zebra finch in our cage.  The bird can't fly yet but is on the floor of the cage.  We put it back in the nest.  Is is OK to leave the baby outside of the nest.  It has wing feathers but still some down and is all black.

Are the parents still there? Baby birds typically come out of the nest before they can fly. It's called fledging. Let's face it - there's not much room in the nest to flap your wings and build up muscle strength. Can you add a little platform in the cage for him to sit on? That would keep the baby out of the waste seed and feces. Out in the wild baby birds flutter from one area to another. A caged bird is so limited. Mom and Dad will take care of the feeding part.

If the baby has some feathers and some down, it's probably trying to fledge. That's normal. But provide some small perches near the floor of the cage for it to perch on. Sitting on the floor of the cage can damage the new tail feathers coming in and soil his feet, tail and chest feathers as he sits in the droppings. It's a good idea to provide some levels of perches from the floor to the upper perch so he can flap and hop his way up. It gives him some exercise for his chest muscles and wings as well. Don't overcrowd the cage; leave some room for exercise.

As for the eggs, leave them another couple days, then remove. Don't want them to rot. Birds don't have a great sense of smell so touching the nest won't be a problem.

Pretty exciting to have the new baby around. Be sure to provide a healthy diet so it can grow well: bones, feathers and muscles.

You can either try putting them back into that nest or, get another nest that's bigger and put them in there. My guess would be that the babies are taking up much of the nest room for the parents to get to them and/or to share the nest with them. I would definitely recommend getting a bigger nest to put them in.

I hope this helps.

Good Luck!

My baby zibra is out of the nest. It can fly but isnt catching on as to where the food is or the water.. The mother is still feeding it? It is almost 4 weeks old. Is that normal? Also, the nest was built ontop of the house and they all sleep their every night.. I feel bad taking it out.. Should I???? Thank you.

Hi I have a zebra finch that constantly leaves its nest when I put it back in. It is 21 days old. Is it ready to leave its parents cage or do I leave it in. Because I am afraid that they will kill him as it has happened in the past. Thank you
