Spotting on Birth Control?

Have any of you guys experienced this issue? I'm on a Lo Loestrin Fe, the smallest dose, I've been on it for about 2-3 months now, the first month was fine, no spotting. I'm supposed to take the bc continuously. When I got to the placebo pills and skipped them, I started spotting lightly around that time, about a panty liner a day of brownish discharge. Ever since then it hasn't stopped. It''s been over a month of the same kind of spotting. The doctor told me to give it a few months. But I wonder if it will ever go away or it just means my body is used to the dose now and I need a higher dose? Has anyone had this issue, and did it ever go away on its own? Also, if you go up the dose in birth control, does it make you gain more weight?
Thanks for any input you can give!

Both low-dose and continuous cycle birth control can contribute to spotting. If you tell your doctor your experiences and concerns about weight gain, they may able find one that hits the sweet spot.
