High RBC & Erythropoietin

I recently had blood tests that showed very high levels RBC and excessive erythropoietins.  My doctor said I have polycythemia and is sending me to a hematologist/oncologist to check for tumors.  I have done some research online and there is little information about this.  I am now waiting for results of a CT scan ran yesterday.  Now that I am a nervous wreck..I wondered if anyone else has this.   My only symptoms are fatigue, headaches, and weight gain.  I was being tested originally for thyroid issues and Dr. just put me on  levothyroxine.  Would the levo cause the increase in blood levels?  It always makes it better if you know your not alone.  Thanks

I too have this problem.. Find out if it is polycythemia vera or secondary polycythemia.  If secondary, there is probably a tumor somewhere is your body.  Also, do you smoke?  I have secondary and dr thought it was from COPD  but after some investigation, he says lungs are not bad enough to cause this so looking for a tumor.  Dr. Mathur also states to me that smoking alone can cause this....hope this helps.  And make sure you get phlebotomy treatments as they help alot.

Hi!
High RBC are usually due to dehydration or low oxygen as in high altitudes and in lung disorders such as asthma. Congenital heart disease, some kidney problems and polycythemia vera are the other causes of increased RBC. Since erythropoietin is also increased, in all probability it is polycythemia vera.  It is a rare inherited genetic disorder. Your thyroid drug is not responsible for it. Treatment is by phlebotomy, where one unit of blood is discarded weekly until desired thickness is reached. At times certain drugs are given. This is a slow developing disease, and patients lead near normal life. Discuss with your treating doctor. All the best! Take care!
