Raised platelets

Hi there

I am a 44 year old female who recently had a swollen painfull foot. After various scans I was sent for a FBC to rule out RA. The RA text came back as okay however my GP advised there were some abnormalities in my blood,
HB 15.6
RBC 5.42
HCT 0.47
Platelets 660
Blood film also showed a large amount of platelets.

My GP has told me its quite normal,
My symptoms are,
Swollen painful foot, cold feet and hands
Short of breath
Tired
itchy skin after a bath
headaches
Blotchy skin

Has any one had similar symptoms and been brushed off by their Doctor?

Thansk in advance :-)

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
Swollen and painful foot, itchy and blotchy skin, tiredness etc with raised platelets can be due to rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriatic arthritis. It is also increased in some bone marrow disorders like myeloproliferative disorders (polycythemia vera, essential thrombocytosis, idiopathic myelofibrosis and chronic myeloid leukemia). All known causes like myeloproliferative disorders of bone marrow, essential thrombocytosis, chronic myeloid leukemia, rheumatoid arthritis etc have to be looked into, and if need be bone marrow biopsy performed. If these are ruled out then other rare causes need to be looked into. One is an absent spleen or a poor functioning spleen. A rare condition known as Kawasaki's disease, which occurs as a result of inflammation of the arteries is another possibility. Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Take care!

The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.
