Hi Dazon50,
I know you posted this comment several years ago, but I thought your
comment was an interesting one. I read a variety of books depending on
what I'm in the mood to read. I don't read to escape reality. When I read
fictional books, I read so that I can enjoy the literary world. When I read
newspaper articles or non fiction, I read to gain information about a certain subject. When I read poetry it is for pure enjoyment. Books are an adventure you enter into with your mind and all of your life experiences
to help you make sense of it. Eve
I used to read fiction all the time for the enjoyment of the story, and absolutely loved reading brightly illustrated picture books to my kids when they were little. Some of those kid's books are so hilariously funny, I'm glad I had a reason to read them.
Since my son became chronically ill, I seem to want to read only for knowledge, no desire for fun reading. If you knew me, you wouldn't believe what I read for "fun" these days - Human Cardiovascular Control, Comprehensive Management of Pituitary Disorders, Biological Treatments for Pervasive Developmental Disorders, etc. etc.
So no, I am not reading to escape reality anymore, and yet I do "enjoy" what I read, I guess for the knowledge I glean from these tomes. And anyway, I still have some of my kid's books. I can go pull Click,Clack Moo - Cows That Type off the shelves if I need a good laugh!

Live in books? Get many paper cuts did you?? LOL
We all read to escape., thats why we choose fiction over autobiographies etc (although they are part fiction most of the time!!)
I had an ex that used to get annoyed because i'd read a book in 2/3 days, he'd say it was a waste of money! Guess what, he was dyslexic & didn't read for pleaure!!
But i understand what you mean about escaping reality, i read adult fiction about vampires & faeries for gods sake!!
Anyone else into Laurell K Hamilton??
Cx
:-)) I used to feel like I could live in books....what a struggle
Reality is everything. There is no way to avoid it...
You know I have often wondered why we book-lovers defend ourselves against critics.
Their words are a reflection of them...
.... Mirror Mirror ... lol !!!
Well Hello if I wanted reality I'd read the newspaper. DUH
People love to criticize don't they? Please!!! What a terrible hobby!!! Reading!! Why, You want me to sell drugs? Now would that make you happy??.......
Of course we read to avoid reality!!! Just for a little while anyway!
Going back to my book now...BYE!
Shoe strings??? Yep, that's a lot worse, LOL
I've heard that!
My friends hate picking up my bags/purses because of the weight of school books and usually one or two books to read for fun. Probably part of the reason I have back problems. =/ My bookshelves have stuffed animals and books. :)
Chewing on shoe strings?! lol Never heard about people chewing on shoe strings but I know a girl who was obsessed with licking things for a while. She's lick the floor, walls, her sister's face, etc.
Share!
:-)))) Share, share......
Yes worse addictions I had one to exercise once .....Hey Im not tellin it here its for my own story group when I get it sorted out... .lol
Alright.....
I took books with me places even though I didn't read them...lol! Had to have them with me just in case I got stranded. I used to get teased by family members who would moan & groan upon picking my bags/purse up.
My shelves were sagging from the weight and I had rows of books in front of books....but that is another topic.
I read once about someone saying escaping into books was an addiction.....I found myself thinking....I can think of worse addictions. Who chews on shoe strings?
There is so much to stretch your imagination in books, isn't there?
d:-D
All the time! That is the reason I love books. They take you to places you've never been and let you meet new people and go on great adventures. :)
