Read the first two books and part of the third while on vacation. I will probably go back and start over on the third when I have the time to give it my full attention. A lot to absorb once you realize what the author was saying about Sweden and the consequences of cradle to grave socialism.
Also watched 'Dragon' in Swedish with English subtitles. I think the translation in the books and the movie is interesting in itself. I don't know Swedish, but the flavor of the translation is interesting.
I agree Noomi Rapace nailed the role.
I belong to a site called Goodreads, and it is always interesting to see others views of books. A lot of people could not get into the first book, and found it too long. Once in, I found them well written. Some blamed the translator, and yet a Swede, who had read them in Swedish and English, said they were the same, except title changed.
I think they could have been edited more, as a lot could have been omitted. I passed books to my daughter, and then my granddaughter, and we all went to see English version film at cinema. I thought the Swedish Lisbeth better than the American actress.
Yes! It was the most exciting fiction I'd encountered in years. Must confess, the last book was scanned as I struggled through the Swedish surnames and explanations of all things political.
I also watched all three, and a compilation (I think that is what it was) of the trilogy on Netflix.
The American film...sanitized and without the original actors was dull.
I still am puzzled about why it was done at all!
So sorry we lost a brilliant writer at such a young age. He and his partner were planning more stories at his death, I believe. Her shabby treatment by his family and the state was shocking. I thought Sweden was an advanced culture compared to ours. Not!
Back to the trilogy. It can be enjoyed on several levels. What I loved most was the writing...it all starts there...then the well drawn characters...and amazing plot. I admit to being fixated on Lisbeth....wasn't she powerful in all her makeup/hair in the courtroom scenes?
For me...it was a story of one woman's; well, several women's victory over insurmountable odds.
I believe any woman who has been unjustly treated by powerful men and their institutions can relate. I should include men, as my 86 year old friend asked if I'd be interested in seeing the first film when it arrived @ a private theatre here!
