brain tumors

My mom had an MRI and it stated she has an "extra- axial pre-pontine lesion measuring 3.4 X 3.2 X 2.2." I was wondering if anyone knew if a PET scan show benign tumors because she had a PET scan done last year after being diagnosed with maligant melanoma on her arm but the PET scan did not show anything at the time. So I was just wondering if a PET scan would even show a benign spot? Also can melenoma spread to the brain if her lymph nodes were negative?

For a PET scan, they give you a tracer of some sort to make a tumor show up. I do not think the benign tumors take up the tracer like the malignant ones, hence why the PET scan works (or so how I think it works).

The doctor will have to tell you if the lesion in her brain is related or not - but it may or may not be cancer. I hope not.
