Could this have an association with the thyroid?

Hey everyone...my mom recently had a needle biopsy for a small 5mm nodule they found in her breast.  They found some cancer so she's having a lumpectomy in 3 weeks, and we're all praying that everything will be ok after that.  However, my mom also has some issues with her thyroid.  She has low thyroid and when they did a sonogram 2 years ago, they discovered that she also has some nodules in that area.  They ran tests and all of them were benign.  Now I'm worried that the cancer they found in her breast could be associated with the nodules in her thyroid.  Since it's been over 2 years since they ran those tests, I'm worried something may have developed in that time span and spread to her breast.  What are the chances of this?  Is 2-3 years enough for something to develop in her thyroid and then later spread to her breast?  She's getting her thyroid glands checked as soon as her surgery is finished.  Please let me know if there could be any association.  Thanks.

I am not a medical professional, but I did read somewhere that cancer rarely, if ever, spreads to the breast from other sites in the body.  Good luck to your mom with her treatment and surgery.
