Mammogram Further Evaluation

I am 40 and had my first screening mammogram.  The results were Birad-0, need further information for a complete evaluation.  The findings were a 2 cm. irregular equal density, focal asymetric density at the 12 o'clock position, middle depth in the right breast.  My breasts are predominantly fatty.  The letter I received said that I needed further eval. but that "Most such findings are benign".  I am really anxious & I don't know what this all means?  I am also average size, but very large breasted, 34G.  On Tuesday, I developed a small red sore on the  right breast. I've had similar sores on the left breast, which the doctor chalked up to the seams in my heavy duty bra. I have a lesser bra now, but the seam could have hit my breast on the sore spot.  I've also had intermittent pain in the breast, neck, underarm, rib cage, arm, shoulder side & back, on the side (left breast) with normal findings.  Just prior to the mamm., due to the pain, my doc did a CBE & all seemed normal and said pain was due to large breasts.  I am wondering if I should be very worried about my Mamm. results, be even more concerned because of the sore, and if I could be having pain related to the "abnormal breast" on the normal side?

Dear PetuniaL,  It is not uncommon that an abnormality found on a screening mammogram would require follow up investigation.  Without any prior studies to compare following up on this is important, repeating the mammogram with more focused views may be all that is needed and will clarify the finding – your doctor will be able to let you know what is being recommended.  Breast pain is a common breast symptom.  The reason for breast pain is not clearly understood, and is not usually associated with breast cancer.

Thank you so very much for your response - You were exactly right - I went for my diagnostic mamm. & ultrasound on Tuesday & they said everything looked "normal" - nothing menacing.  They said It looked like regular breast tissue and that they often call back when they don't have a baseline to compare to.  They are a VERY conscientious group and I am going back in 6 months just to make sure once again, but thank goodness they thought everything looked good.

I TRULY appreciate your response.  Thank you so very much.  this is a wonderful forum and thank goodness for people like yourself who take time out of their day to help people like me.
