Mammogram results

On a routine screening mammogram the reading was:  L breast possible irregular nodule .  THe right breast was possible architectual changes.  This was a new digital machine, according to the technician that I spoke with.  I cannot get a repeat study for one week and am very nervous about this result.  Could someone with more experience weigh in on this please?  should I have another radiologist look at it?  Should I get copies sent to another setting to get the repeat study done sooner?

THankyou,  Dee

I just wanted to say that I understand that the waiting and anxiety are the hardest part of any ordeal.  A week turn  around is not that long and  the good news is that repeat tests are typically called "diagnostic" which means someone will read them and make recommendations within minutes of having your test.-even if that recommendation is for a biopsy as it was for me, which of course lead to more anxiety and a 5 day wait.  You have to use the support staff they provide to ask lots of questions and reach out to people for support.  Unfortunately, the waiting is something you just have to move through.

My best to you,  Kelleen

Hi there.

I understand your concern.  The finding of an irregular nodule is a herald for further investigation.  A repeat mammogram study may help in ascertaining that there is really this irregular lesion.  However, if it turned out to be the same findings, then other imaging studies could be requested.  An example is a breast ultrasound or breast MRI (which is more accurate but can have false positive results).  Ultimately, you may need a biopsy of the lesion to be definite about the nature of the nodule.  It is OK if you want to seek second opinion with another radiologist.  I hope everything will turn out OK.

Regards and God bless.
