cluster of microcalcifications

There is a cluster of microcalcifications in my left breast found on my second mammogram.  My first report from the radiologist stated cluster of heterogeneous calcifications in left breast which came back in the ACR category as 0 which means incomplete.  I was wondering is the second report more reliable than the first.  The second report doesn't have heterogenous calcifications but microcalcifications instead. I need to have a stereotactic biopsy and am very nervous.  All I keep on seeing on other websites are cancer with clusters of microcalcification.  Hope I can get some answers.  Lori

Just wanted to to add my good wishes for benign results to zouzi's excellent answer.
The statistics are definitely in your favor and many benign conditions can cause microcalcs on mammo. The only way to be 100% sure is with the biopsy. Make sure your doctor explains everything to you and answers all your questions. Most doctors understand it's not so easy to the women going through it and that they will be nervous, so make sure he/she knows how you feel. It's never fun and waiting for the results can be stressful---we've all been through it and understand your feelings. I know it's hard to not think about the "what ifs" but dealing with "what is" is always better. Try to stay calm, keep busy to make the wait easier, rely on freinds and family for support and stay positive. Wishing you an easy biopsy and benign results

Hi,
On your first mammogram report stating a BIRADS category 0,means that the results were incomplete,(as you correctly stated) and that's why a second one was required.
Your second Mammogram, even though you don't say what was the BIRADS score,I presume that it must have been a 4 to warrant a biopsy. When a biopsy is recommended,it doesn't mean that it's breast cancer...it only means that there is a suspicion and more investigation is needed.
Microcalcifications that grow in a cluster are suspicious because they sometimes cluster around a mass.In other words, while the mass may not be visualized on film, a cluster of microcalcifications may indicate that there is an abnormal growth in the area. It is proper in most cases to biopsy the area of microcalcifications.
Many biopsies done on clustered calcification return a benign finding .Statistically it is reported that 80% of those biopsies come back benign and this finding could very well be for you too.
Good luck and hoping for good results!
