pet scans and microcacifications

I am 55 years old had recttal cancer removed 4/o8, and luckly no bag and no treatment. I have dense breast with micro calcification. Had a biopsy of right breast 2 years ago and was fine. Went for mamo and sono this past Monday and they saw microcalcification that they say is suspicious. So next friday I go to the hospital for yet anothet biopsy.

My question is, for my surgery in april for the rectal cancer I had a chest cat scan and a full body pet scan. Both came up good. Should that help alittle in my fear of breast cancer. Also this is my third surgery on my breast. Wouldn't it be better ot have them cleaned out of all breast tissue nad have implants put in to stop the every year worry??

Hi there.

The risk of developing breast cancer is dependent on a lot of factors including family history and number of previous biopsies.  I suggest that you discuss with your doctors if your risk of developing breast cancer would warrant risk reduction strategies such as doing a mastectomy.

The negative PET scans are indeed comforting in terms of the colon cancer, however, small breast nodules may not light up on PET scans, especially in very early stages (those that would present with microcalcifications).  I suggest that you proceed with your planned treatment and discuss the risk reduction strategies.

Regards and God bless.
