Giving $

I got into a little debate with someone on another forum about giving. Do you think that if someone is struggling with $ (paying bills, feeding family) that they must give $ to the church they attend?

My belief is that God would want you to provide for your family 1st and if you don't have the means to give $ weekly at church that he understands. And that other service can be made up for the giving.

I am in a stiuation right now due to increase in taxes that I am no longer able to give on a weekly basis. I do give in other ways (serving the church and giving for missions) but the weekly giving has to be stopped in order to pay all bills and feed the family. If I go by the standard 10% weekly then that means I would lose a car and go a week without food montly.

Just wanted to get other thoughts about this.

Rainbow456 How so? If I ask where North is everyone will point in different directions, but we all know there is only one North. So this whole opinion thing doesn't really apply. We aren't stating what our opinion is we want to know what the Bible teaches. Friend, that's what being a bible Christian is all about, not what sounds nice all the time.

Also, when we give to the store house and it is given to the poor God gets the Glory not us.
Yes we should use our Gifts given to us to help others that's a given but your teetering on works...no works of ours will get us into heaven it's only what Christ did on the cross <3 that makes me Justified, Righteous, Sancifited and much more before a Holy God to Jesus be the Glory forever and ever <3  I'm not saying don't do works because that is the only thing we take to heaven the things we've done pure in heart for Jesus Christ and God sees our heart..that is why Jesus said when you do good deeds do not go around like the Pharsies (that stood on the corners of the city praying) for they got their reward but to store your reward up in heaven where moths can't rot and theives can't steal..the final Judgement will be fire (a refurbished earth) and think of god and silver when put through fire it takes away all the impurities and leaves you with what is precious gold and silver...Myself I think this thread was started by the convicition of the Holy Spirit and there are a lot of good biblical responces and it's up to the person to act, to much is given much is required...Be Blessed <3

Yes Jesus bore our wraft and we are Justifed and made right with a Holy God as long as we are walking in the Spirit.
I agree some churchs are all about money that is why Jesus said it is hard for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of heaven using a needle eye (represented the gates of the city which had a small opening, thus a camel with a lot of "stuff" had to be unloaded before entering the city) and do not be decieved for the road is wide the the door is narrow.
I search myself daily and ask God for me to do His Will, I'm sure most days I fail miserably but when I do I pray He gets the Glory through Christ Jesus <3
Be Blessed and Live <3

Opinions... Eleanor Roosevelt said "Do in YOUR heart what's right for you to do for whatever you do You will get criticized.." Maybe she was right.. God looks on the heart, not on the outward appearance... Wisdom does not always come from those that think they are wise... God uses the weak things of the world to confound the wise.. just one more opinion. Everybody's got one...GRACE TO YOU..

April2 Well I'm not saying that other translations are entirely bad but you have to realize that newer translations omit parts of the bible and some even take out key parts of texts. You have to understand the times were living in, soon it'll be hard to tell people anything about the bible because it's turned into a ecumenical bible - where Jesus will have to come down to be equal with every other God.

So yes I do read other translations but I always check the KJV to see if it says. If you look it up I'm sure you'll see the big difference between bibles. I also suggest you look up a bible family tree and where most new translations stem from. You'd be surprised.

Just think about Satan's original lie. Thou shalt NOT surely die. One little word introduced warped everything and Satan knows the Bible better than us, so he has people warping the bible... Rev 22: 18-19 If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

Charity begins at home in my opinion. I have known people that gave a percentage of their income every week and ended up relying of family members or the very church they belonged to, to provide for their needs as a result. Some people simply do not make enough money to provide for their family and give to the church. I think in cases like this, god would not expect them to give money, but with that said, there are other ways of giving. Charity or volunteer work being only a couple of options.

When my son came to me needing help on the electric bill or it was going to be shut off, and told me that he gave money to the church, frankly it ticked me off! As I said, charity begins at home.

I have to disagree that anything other than the King James version is "perverted". I understand the the KJV may be the closest to the original Greek translation but probably the most accurate would be the original Hebrew translation.
I do like the KJV and it's very pretty but can be very difficult to understand so I usually recommend (especially for the new believer) the New International Version or the New Living Version. I like both of those but also like The Message (for every day language) and pretty much all the translations. I have several different translations just so I can see how it sounds in different versions.
Really, all of them give the same message, just using different words or ways to get the point across.
I also have a Bible concordance, which as I mentioned earlier I believe is a good idea for everyone to have, especially those wanting to dig in and study more. I have a study bible, which helps explain what I just read and how it pertains to today and also explains some of the history and way things were done back in Old Testament times of New Testament times. It's pretty interesting.
Again, I like to look at all the translations and really would like to get my hands on an original Hebrew translation, but I think it helps give me understand more what I'm reading.

I also make a practice (and encourage all of us to do this!) of praying before I read and asking God to reveal to me what He wants to show me or what He wants me to learn for that day. It really does help!

Just think, some day we will be able to see Him face to face and will be able to talk to Him in person and be able to get all our questions answered that we didn't understand here on earth! I can't wait for that day!
God bless!

Our of the abundance of your heart you should give and I agree totaly with Jolly and tbabi what they said :)
We must give God out of the first fruits...Do you think a Holy God should get our leftovers?  Not being mean or anything so please do not take it like that, just a straight shooter.

Well you'll notice that many new translations are changed to suit people.

Bible verses affected
Ne American Standard 909
Revised version 788
New World Translation 767
NIV 695 :(
Good News 614
Amplified 484
Douay 421
Old Jehovah Witnesses 120
NKJV ignored the textus recepticus 1200x

*Which Bible Can We Trust? Les Garrett, 1982

I only deal with the King James which is not preverted like some translation stemming from the Alexandrian family and Western family.

Anyways, just pray about it. I know what your saying, too many people write a cheque and think that's all God requires but that's not all.. God wants us return and not rob him and he wants us to help prepare people for his coming. God knows the heart...

With the widow, when she gave what she gave it was 100 percent....we don't know about other times.  That is what led me to suggest the idea that in better times, consider giving more than the 10 percent.

Thanks,
:-)

I think it is between you and God.  You give the best of what you have in other areas, he sees that.  Some people have a gift in giving $ and like the other gifts, it is necessary as God takes it and multiplies it.

Some give time with volunteering in an area where help is needed.  Time is precious also and some people find it easier to give $ than time.

If your conscience is clear before the Lord and he has given you peace, you will know it.  It is better to give from the heart willingly (prompting from the HS) than from obligation and/or guilt.

Another suggestion if this bothers you is to keep track and later when things are going much better, give over the 10 percent...just a suggestion.

I am reminded of the widow's mite and how she gave out the little she had (probably less than 10 percent) and others gave less than they could have...she is remembered for all time for what she did.

We are to encourage & build each other up....the HS does the convicting.  We step in the role of the Holy Spirit (HS), we have taken our eyes of God.

It is really up to the individual and God but I believe the Bible says give your first fruits. Seek first the Kingdom and all these things will be added/. It all depends on your level of faith and trust. I think by you asking the question you may really know the answer deep down. Think of the story of Elijah and the widow woman. What do you have in your house. Just enough to make one cake for my son and I and then we die. Elijah told her to give it to him. So she did. Her pot never went dry. She lived b/c God always provided. What if she did not have faith enough to trust God and made the last cake and ate it . What could have happened. OR Elisha and the woman with the pot of oil. Same thing. She gave and her oil never ran dry. I know it is hard. We are in the same situation but just as the psalmist David said. I have never seen the righteous forsaken or His seed begging bread. My husband cut our tithe a year ago without telling me and I realized things were getting worse instead of better, not just finances but with our children and our own relationship. He finally  made things right. We still live pay check to pay check but God always comes through.

Depends on what Bible you read and follow if it really is 10%.

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
"Moreover, you shall speak to the Levites and say to them, 'When you take from the sons of Israel the tithe which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall present an offering from it to the LORD, a tithe of the tithe.

King James Bible
Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.

American King James Version
Thus speak to the Levites, and say to them, When you take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.

American Standard Version
Moreover thou shalt speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithe which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up a heave-offering of it for Jehovah, a tithe of the tithe.

Douay-Rheims Bible
Command the Levites, and declare unto them: When you shall receive of the children of Israel the tithes, which I have given you, offer the firstfruits of them to the Lord, that is to say, the tenth part of the tenth:

Darby Bible Translation
And to the Levites shalt thou speak, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer a heave-offering from it for Jehovah, the tenth of the tithe.

English Revised Version
Moreover thou shalt speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithe which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, a tithe of the tithe.

Webster's Bible Translation
Thus speak to the Levites, and say to them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up a heave-offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.

World English Bible
"Moreover you shall speak to the Levites, and tell them, 'When you take of the children of Israel the tithe which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall offer up a wave offering of it for Yahweh, a tithe of the tithe.

Young's Literal Translation
'And unto the Levites thou dost speak; and thou hast said unto them, When ye take from the sons of Israel the tithe which I have given to you from them, for your inheritance, then ye have lifted up from it the heave-offering of Jehovah, a tithe of the tithe;

Well I'm not gonna argue with you,  every man is accountable for themselves..

I understand where your coming from, I really do but tithe and offerings are separate. The tithe is 10% (Numbers 18:26) whereas the offerings are freewill. Even service is from the heart because you love God and the love comes out to do good. God rightfully claims our income and possessions, for in fact, every-thing belongs to Him. We are merely stewards of His gifts. For me it just makes sense to give back because there are specific commands from God and God never changes. Why would he make a command and say no I was wrong or it no longer applies.

Anyways, why not put Him to the test? He invites you to do so. If you lovingly and gratefully bring your tithe into the storehouse, not with the motive of protection of money, but with a thankful heart, you too may open the windows of heaven. Into your life may flow blessings so great and so many that there will not be room enough to receive them.

God says, "Test Me in This". Is it your plan to step out in faith and return God's tithe? I hope so.. do it with love and be a cheerful giver..

I guess I just have to disagree with most of you on this issue.

Let me ask:
A follower has no money and is unable to give to his church does God not bless him because he can't give?
A non-follower goes to church just to go but gives thousands of dollars does he get blessed more then the man who doesn't give?

I don't think God measures your honor to him by how much you give or don't give. I am not saying do not give and I have given and continue to give in other ways then $, but my current situation does not allow me to give like I once have given. Do I take the food out of my childerns mouth to show my honor? I don't think God would want that. If I were to give the made up number of 10% one Sunday I would need that return that very day or my family would not be eating that night.

Yes God works in his ways...my wife has just been given OT for the next month which is great and helps me out for the next month but after that I will be in the same situation. So again I am not advocating not giving but I think giving can be done in other ways then $.

God promises to open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing if we faithfully return the tithe - a blessing so great as to overflow. Some people say they cannot afford to pay tithe. Friend, you cannot afford not to. It is better to have nine tenths blessed than to have our whole income cursed. With the Lord's blessing on the remaining nine tenths, many have testified that it goes further than when they selfishly kept it to themselves. When we return our tithe it does something for us. It takes away selfishness which dominates the carnal nature. In one way, God asks us to give for our own good. It helps develop Christian character.

Malachi 3:8-12 Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me.“But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’
“In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,” says the Lord Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty.

The principle of giving to the Lord's service reflects the heart of God. If we are not willing to give to God's movement and support it, then we really are not in principle a part of that movement. It shows our lack of trust in God's leading of His church. Giving is such a blessing and God loves a cheerful giver.

We must remember that the money will give is distributed for the pay of the pastors, the message to go around the world, for electricity and repairs.. many things..

Proverbs 3:9,10 Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops;
then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

When you come to truth you have to do what you are taught, God winks when you don't know a thing but when you do you are held accountable for that. I hope you don't feel like I'm picking on you but I'm saying what is true. It will be hard but God will lead you through. :)

I don't think your church is wrong in saying give what you can afford, after all, they can't force people to give and who would want to do that or feel forced? As you mentioned in the scripture above, God wants a cheerful giver, not someone is feeling forced to give or gives reluctantly or resentfully. God wants us to trust Him with everything in our lives, even our finances. We do have to be careful that we don't become legalistic where we are more worried about following rules, etc. than working on our relationship and love for the Lord.

I'm guilty of this as well and it's something I've thought a lot about. We did give (tithe) in the past but haven't the last few years, after moving to a new church and losing my job. Money is tight and we're in worse shape financially than ever before. It's a tough call. I do give in other areas but have thought about trying to figure out a budget and see if we can add this back in.

I'd say really pray about it and see what you feel the Lord is saying to you. Peace and blessings!

I AGREE with jolly eventhough we might be down 2 our last dollar! GOD still wants us 2 trust him he knows the heart but trust is what counts the most! Now if ur financialy broke thats a different story! But if GOD has blessed u with a job thank himm 4 the job & trust that he will deliver on the 10 percent! It might not be with money always but he will bless u with something! Im guilty of not giving & i have a good paying job! & the holy spirit convicts me of it! So i will make it my duty 2 give it 2 him out of love not stuburnly! You think u got it tough try living in Cali!!

Is my church wrong in saying that people don't have to give 10% if they can not afford it? I think it is more about the act the the actual $.

Vance we are suppost to give 10% to GOD..HE is only asking for 10 cents on the dollar...back in the days before money they gave 10% of crops or animals..JESUS said give to Ceasers what is Ceasars and give to GOD what is GOD's...and I truly believe that if we give faithfully like we should GOD wil provide and not let you go without...this is where faith comes in...and I have complete faith in GOD and that HE will provide...

I know from personal experience that since I have been tithing the way I should I have not gone without and I am on disability, GOD is faithfull, and if you give to HIM the way HE has instructed, then HE will not let you go with out in your life....God Bless..brian
