MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
I am sorry to hear about your sister-in-law. Kidney cancer is of various types and is usually treated by surgery. The extent of surgery depends on the stage of disease. In early stages, part of the kidney along with cancer is removed and the rest of the kidney functions normally. In later stages, whole kidney may need to be removed. Generally chemotherapy with traditional anti-cancer drugs and radiotherapy is not recommended for kidney cancer. Certain hormones and newer drugs are being tried these days. The survival depends on the stage of the cancer. Localized kidney cancer has much better survival rates than cancer which has spread. You need to discuss all this with her treating oncologist. Take care!
