I had mild dysplasia about a year ago. I recently had another pap that also came back showing mild dysplasia. My Dr performed a colposcopy and it came back showing high grade moderste dysplasia. He wants to do a Leep procedure to remove the abnormal cells. I was just wondering if it was normal for it to go from mild to moderate so quickly??

Hello.

Immediate response to your question is no. But here is so more info...I recently had abnormal pap smear - atypical glandular cells. I had follow-up biosies in vagina, cervix and uterus. It turned out that I had severe dysplasia in cervix and cervical canal. Dysplasia is term for pre cancerous cells - but they are NOT invasive cancer. There are three levels - mild, moderate and severe - and sometimes a level in between and then cancer. I had a surgical cone biopsy to remove the pre cancerous cells - AND my gyno says this is almost always curative! (no more dysplaia and certainly no chance of it evolving into cancer).

Majority of abnormal paps turn out to be nothing - and in my case it was sorta something - but as long as we ladies continue to get frequent screening most cancers can be caught and prevented! (ovarian is trickier I guess)

(note I have already had once cancer - don't need another).

Best of luck to you and hope that everything works out.

Hi there...actually abnormal cells are quite common with pap tests. You'll have to have some further testing by your doctor (if they feel it's necessary) to rule out cervical cancer. A pap test does not diagnose ovarian cancer.
Talk to your doctor and see what they feel needs to be done next...
take care!
