Aware

I have noticed that my kitty seems to know what day it is , on Trash day she hangs in the house more , they come early in the morning, and on that day she doesnt race downstairs to get out, she sits peering out of the window , this is before the come down the street , and one cant hear them until they are on the way .Have any of you found your kitty seems to have that kind of awareness ..

Hi Margy.  I'm not sure if Tweety knows which day it is but rather, a cats hearing is much more acute than ours so I'm sure she hears the truck coming long before we would.  Kittys might feel the rumble of the ground from the trucks, too.  You do indeed, have a very beautiful special girl!  I just love her!  Especially that picture of her in the sink.  Too cute!

No I didnt I did not like the sound of them , what I have done is arranged for a house/pet sitter well I am checking out the best one, one woman is coming to see me here tomorrow, I have asked they stay overnight, more or less stay here except for shopping/work they have to do . I have the 2 others lined up also and if I dont like any I have time to look for more .It will also be useful to water my garden and bring mail in , so although its not cheap I will feel better at leaving her .Furballs, my tweety eats all day long, I leave the dried food down and also some wet food, so she snacks when she wants to ,she knows when I am eating eggy and hops in for a bite , I think she will miss us , we are so bonded and to think I spent the first few months she found us , looking for a home for her ...obviously without success.

So Margy.  Did you find a vet who you're comfortable with to board Tweety?  I think you live pretty far from me, but the big vet down the street from me has those large condos and someone who let's the cats out into a little yard area.  I wouldn't hesitate leaving Jade there.

Cats and dogs both respond to routines.  So, this doesn't surprise me at all that the cat knows when it's trash day.  Ever notice the cat knows what time it is when it comes to breakfast and dinner time?  Yep, they definitely know.

I hadnt thought about their acute hearing, I know she sees things in the dark I cant see, yes jade that would account for her knowing they were coming, not having had a cat before I really wasnt aware they were this smart, dare I say it but shes smarter than the doggies I had, aww they were adorable also ...nancy we do put the cans out the afternoon before ...gosh it takes intelligence sometimes to figure things out LOL

Cats are very good at making associations and being aware of routines.  Most likely it is something that you do that triggers the awareness.  Do you take the trash out of the house that morning or the night before or roll the trash bin to the curb?  The association could also be with other outdoor cats, stray dogs, or even wildlife who have made associations with the trash bins lining the street and they are out looking for food.  If your cat originally had an encounter with one of them on trash day, that could be what she is peering out the window for.

My cats are very aware of all sorts of routines.  Everything from what I routinely do just before they get food or treats to my routine when I am getting ready to leave the house.
