Mc Cat family fast news...

1-Kids are AGAIN with worms :(
Supposing they have no fleas ( hope so) vet and me were counting with the probability the dosage had been insuficcient cos they are heavier than I was supposing they were. She wants me to give then the medicine again.
If she said there's no problem in doing that less than a month before,ok, I do...
My cousin came from USA for a brief vacancy and she brought me a package of those pocket pills,Greenies. Its flavor duck and pea, do they like those? Its also written is hypoallergenic, all of then are this way?
I was happy with the gift but not intending use it so soon but I guess I will have to...
Do the cats swallow the whole stuff or they can notice the antiworm taste inside those and try to spit it?
Wish they could stop getting worms and allowed me buy some funnier cat things...
Maybe they are needing some natural  raw food - as lizzards, birds or skunks -never saw a worn in Lolo 's poo!

2-Loreena got her own backpack.I've got one for free, sturdy one, just a little bit worned out and, since she liked it, I'm trainning her to take fast trips inside ( just in the backyard, by now).
Well, half inside, since she keeps the face and many times the paws outside :)
Now I'm a kangaroo mother - wish kittens could accept that, Loreena was never hard to transport, she's a lovely girl and trust me a lot.

Yeah, we have to watch out for our girls best interest whether they like it or not.

2wks ago, this same tech gave Jade her pill while still in the carrier.  I think where things went wrong this time was the tech put Jade in her lap.  Jade hates that - she NEVER sits in our lap and will freak.

Yikes!  We just got back from the vet, Apple and omgosh, the tech couldn't even get it down and Jade is fighting her and foaming at the mouth!  I've never seen so much saliva!  I'm shaking, still.  Finally, the tech just gives her a shot since the pills were kind of destroyed.

Man, we will ALWAYS do a shot and never those large Drontal pills again!  Ugh, that was terrible!  On the way home, my husband said he saw the pill pockets at the vet so at least I know where to find them if we should need them.  Most definitely you'd have to fragment those Drontal pills since they're so large.

Man, after that fiasco, I am even MORE impressed you medicate all three girls by yourself!!!

Lucky you - about the vet.Enjoy if /when you can - but get prepared...
Mine are one impossible to reach without his vet car and the other would last about 15 or 20 minutes walking- if I was not transporting them...That's why I said that...

But if the problem is just the size I guess greenies will help you -the pockets are small so you will have to give then fracionated as well.If you could do like they say and  do not touch the pocket after touching the medicine I guess she will accept better - I couldnt so I prefered not offer that as a treat,in my hand
Girls are damn smart as well and i guess she would lick the pocket , notice the pill and refuse both.

"If I had to take them to vet to get pills they all would die soon,I'm afraid :-)"

Omgosh, you just crack me up, Apple!  Our vet is within walking distance so the entire event only lasts for 10mins from the time we leave the driveway 'til we're pulling back in.  Any farther and we'd probably rethink the issue and try harder ourselves.  We are spoiled with them right up the street.

We've had to medicate Jade from the day we met her so she (and we) are fairly used to it.  We gave her a pill twice a day for 4mos when she had cryptococcus, but those pills were tiny whereas the drontal is so much larger which is our problem.  That was also 4yrs ago so we're a little out of practice.

Jade is so funny.  She KNOWS when we're about to do something to her no matter how covert we are about it.

p.s. "Popsicle" would be the correct word :)

Yep,I'm in the back of the cat,sit on the floor in place easy to find a pill if spit- just in case.I make her open the mouth - they all do this not with pleasure but I normally dont have to force them, just put my hands and fingers dangerously close and they open it.
You can use a plastic stick like the ones from icecream ( I would say popsicle but I'm not sure about  this word) if afraid of using fingers first times...
I've  forgot to ask you: did you open Jade's mouth for some other reasons? Like for putting treats,a piece of dry food  or just to take a look?
If not maybe it could be helpful, try with foods she loves the most, when shes not in need of pills, for her get used something good could came from the gesture
Good luck!

PS If I had to take them to vet to get pills they all would die soon,I'm afraid :-)
And foaming was not the worse part - after knowing it was normal I accepted that.Worse part was when she started throwing up ever time I tried and hidding under the furniture scared, vomited and without motivation  even  to clean itself

Aww,,,I love when you say Loreena pats you.  That's so darn cute!

I'm glad the pill pockets were a hit, but oh my gosh, all three girls - whew.  You must have the patience of a saint!  You are so good to your girls.  I am now thinking I might try the pill pockets since you had such good luck with them and all three girls liked it.

Today is 2wks since the first dose of Drontal so we'll run Jade up to the vet for a tech to give her the second dose.  I think we should at least "try" tonight since we watched the tech closely, but my husband doesn't want to - want's to take the easy way out, lol.

I can see where the liquid would be undesirable - that was a horrible experience you had with all the foaming.  Jade did that once with some med we had to give and it's a scary sight.

Apple, when you give the pills, are you in the back of Loreena (or whoever) so she can't back up, open her jaw, tilt her head back and pop them in?  The tech makes it look so damn easy, you know?

I would gladly fly to USA to give Jade the Drontal- you just need to call me or pm to set the thing :-)
She must be a cute creature, for sure...
I know the pills size - we have the same med here and girls already used that. This time is Endal, its almost the same and a little smaller (not as much as I wished ) and I'm also having to give then one and a half - that means 3 times each cat...
Did it today - with the Grennies ( thankfully package contents is about 40,cos I used 11 just today =9 for half pills plus 2 empty as "bonus" )

Conclusions about:
1- They do like the taste and smell.Loreena patted me to get some in advance when I was still opening the pack.

2- Not sure if they would bite and swallow both together,I tried just once and something tells me someone would soon notice the pill and spit all the content. No way of recovering a medicine mixed with food spit off if so.
So I used that the way I do with other products and put those pockets inside their mouths. If someone spit you just have to recover it and put more deep second time:for stubborn cats you have to keep the mouth gently but quite closed before

3-I didnt have to close the mouths after putting the treat - well. just once, Joy was the one.Other times I just keep their heads bent and wait for then to bite and swallow

4- Its a lot hard do not touch the pocket with the same hand you touch medicine the way they recomend you.Specially if you have to keep your eyes on 2 cats at the same time and care for no one steal treats or ingest pills that are not their own
Not bad, considering it was the first try with the product

But believed me,I "begged" the vet to prescribe pill instead of liquid last time he wanted me to give one,I had a quite bad experience with the liquid sulfa and dont want to see no more cats traumatized for vomiting bad taste products.
If Loreena was not an adorable girl that trust me a lot I would be in a big trouble cos she wont be accepting nor liquid nor pills, she refused even treats after the happening and took some time do do it again.
I still have one liquid anti- worm here, from the  time kids are babies.

You could always crush the pills or empty the capsule and mix the powder with a little food or mix it with a little water and give it via a syringe.  Or just use a liquid wormer to begin with.

Since you're an expert, would you please fly here to CA to give Jade her pills?  I'll pay for your flight - it's probably only several thousand dollars for a round trip from Brazil to the US, haha.

I know, Apple, you are constantly having to medicate your girls.  The one benefit to that is, like you said, you become expert at it which is a plus.  Just think, some people NEVER do such things.  My sister, for one, is a good example.  No vet, no flea treatment, no worm treatment and her cat is indoor/outdoor.  Ugh, I can't even think about it, it really upsets me.

We watched the vet tech 2wks ago and she handled Jade exactly like the pictures Opus posted on the Health Pages on How to Pill a Cat.  I am MOST impressed you get all this medicine down not one cat, but three all by yourself.  Most Impressed!  These particular worm pills are called Drontal and they're larger than say, antibiotic pills or anything we've ever had to give Jade and we simply couldn't get them down her - she kept spitting them out so we had the vet do it (no charge.)

In fact I'm becoming an expert in stuffing pills in cats :-)
My only trouble was having always something different and fresh to wrap the pills. Many times my lunch was based on the product I will need for giving the cat's medicine...( you dont need more than I pea size amount of tuna for,so...)
Loreena accepts hers easier, cos kittens dont like to be put in my nap for no reason, not even to be patted.
Seems like I dont have more than a week free without having to do so.
And you are right, they should do that in capsules with the proper dosage.
When I gave ranitidina for my girls, it came from a manipulation drugstore and I noticed capsules are easier to be swallowed. But they dont work with the products used as antiworms, unfortunatelly

Aw, Apple...I'm glad Loreena like's her new pack.  Your description sounds so cute!  Oh god, the worms, I know what you mean.  I think you won't know if the girls will swallow the entire pocket pill with the medicine in it until you try it.  I've never given those pocket pills so I don't know anything other than what's been said here on the forum.  Good luck with that!

I'm glad you brought up worm medicine since Jade is due TODAY for her second dose, but I'd forgotten that.  We had the vet give it 2wks ago, but we'll try to do it ourselves this time.  Not easy with such a large pill plus another half a one.  Medicating animals is not any fun, I'm sure you will agree.
