Cat Nutrition

I have a 3 year old male cat.  He occasionally regurgitates immediately after eating..this occurs 1-2x monthly.  I have fed him Nature's Variety line since he was a kitten...for the past 2 years I have fed him Nature's Variety Instinct.  He LOVES this food.  I brought my cat to the vet today for a physical...and the vet recommended I give him a type of Purina food that is easily digestible.  However, Nature's Variety is such a better quality food....95% meat, no by products, no fillers, no grain, and no gluten.  So my question is....should I stick with Nature's Variety???  Also, are beef and lamb harder to digest???  He eats lamb, venison, beef, and chicken.  Should I just stick with chicken, rabbit, and venison???  Thank you!!!

You're sure not alone with worrying about your baby!  There are many of us on the forum who's cats are our life and worrying just comes with the territory.  I'm glad to hear your boy is vomiting immediately after eating.  That lets us know he's simply scarfing down his food too fast.  And I will bet, like Jade, this happens more in the morning when he's gone without food all night?  That's the case with Jade, anyway.

The smaller portions and the waiting in between is time consuming and not everyone's schedule will permit it so I'm glad yours does and happy that it's working!

Hi Annie,
It's definitely not digested, he will vomit immediately after eating.  So I'm pretty sure it's due to him eating too fast.  Feeding him smaller portions is working.  I'm a huge worry wart when it comes to my baby....so even the once monthly vomit makes me worry.  He literally inhales his food, he'll eat it in seconds, so now he doesn't have a choice but to eat smaller portions, and wait in between portions.  Thanks for your input!!

Thanks Jade!!  Yes I definitely don't want to switch his food....I know how hard it can be.  I've been feeding him smaller portions..which definitely does work.  So I'm sticking with lighter meats in the Nature's Variety line...to see if that prevents even the 1-2x monthly vomitting.

If he is tossing out food that is not digested, check out hairball medications like Petromalt.  If the food is fully digested when he throws up, tell the vet about it.  You want to be sure he doesn't have any kind of abdominal blockage.

Hi Gia and welcome to the forum!  Since your cat is loving his food, just stick with the better quality most definitely.  As to how easy different meats are to digest - I don't know, maybe someone else will.  I'm thinking your kitty might be like mine - he just eats too fast and vomits.  And once or twice a month isn't too much to start changing your boys food which is much harder than it sounds. Try feeding him smaller portions and through out the day if your schedule permits and see if this helps the vomiting.

Good luck to you!
