Can a cat die from fright?

I have an old cat, she's about 17 and she's really paranoid about everything. I live where jets fly over during football season and we get loud thunderstorms and stuff so I worry about her.

Is it possible for her to be scared to death?

Try one of the pet supply stores...here's Petco's online link for the product.

I don't have a vet. We can't afford it.

Check with your vet, I think Feliway makes a plugin "air freshener" that puts out the calming pheremones in their formula.

She's very jumpy. Sometimes even a cupboard closing makes her back end jump a little.

If a dog is afraid of thunderstorms, for example, he or she will either go ballistic or catatonic.  If your cat is afraid of loud noises, you would have seen some obvious sign, either that or hiding under the bed.  You say she is paranoid, what cues do you get from kitty that she is frightened?

Hi Iheart,

LOL! Not to be a wise guy, but if your she is 17 years old and you have lived where you are now and she is still kicking at the ripe old age of 17....I would say that's a definite NO!

Now if you just moved there, and she is not accustomed to the noises, she will have to adjust. That time of adjustment may be time for concern only in the fact that she is no youngster anymore. Like humans, any oldie has a  number of things about to break. She is no different and her heart could be affected by Stress. I would ask the vet for something to calm her down when you are not there. When you are there all she needs , like any of us, is a gentle hand to reach out and tell her it will be alright. Try especially hard to love n her when these sounds occur. She needs to know she is Safe.

This is only my opinion, others here might have ideas also.

Good Luck,
CML
