Is Trimethoprim safe for cats

I look after several feral cats and one has an URI. The cat in question will not allow us to handle him but we can feed him seperate. I have some Trimethoprim and wondered in the right dose this would work for him. Our local cat shelter cannot help as they are overrun and vets are just to expensive. Hope there is someone who can help.

Hiya. Thanx for your comments When I said the cat was suffering from URI I should have said upper respiratory infection. But thanx for answering my question about Trimethoprim. Good job NO-7 will eat anything because I HATE the taste of them! ;)

I just had to giggle a little.  We've been talking about UTI so much that it has become rote.  :)

geez, I'm a little red faced here....you are so right ali, I read URI and my brain was on UTI....duh...thx for bringing that to MY attention..

well sure don't need an urinalysis now.....man I feel dumb.

however URI's are only sensitive to some antib's so again you will need a Vet to prescribe the right one. Cats with a healthy immune system can overcome this in a few days/weeks but cats with a weak immune system it can become fatal...and the cats should all be isolated or it will spread...I know how impossible this is with ferals, thats why so many are ill :(

many Vets will tell you to use L-lysine supplement in their food, this helps strengthen the immune system. I will send you a link to a very good one, use 1/2 a scoop daily, it comes in powder form so will need to be mixed with canned food or something soft the kitty will eat....even yogurt.

heres also a good site with info on an URI...good luck and thanks for caring abt these poor little souls.

I thought a URI was an upper respiratory infection?

hi...first of all how do you lf the cat is suffering from an URI without having a urinalysis done? He may well have bladder crystals and NO infection, infections are rare....the best form of control of these crystals is feeding CANNED food and Never dry kibble.....

this antibiotic is safe for use in cats....however NO antibiotic should ever be used without a confirmed diagnosis or you risk creating a super infection...ALSO like with us humans certain antibiotics work on certain strains of organisms and not on others so until the urine is analyzed to find out what its susceptible to you won't know if this is the correct treatment.

I know its hard when dealing with ferals....what symptoms is he showing? straining to pee?
if so he may well be blocked from these crystals in that case its life threatening and antibiotics won't be of any use...

please post back and I will try to help♥
